大福寺由来
行基菩薩（668～749）が当地を訪れ、八反田川の源水の地に修行道場を開いた。その後、大同４年（809）に聖観世音像を本尊とする金剛山観音寺が建立された。しかし、その地が山深いため、今から約800年前の鎌倉時代に折戸に場所を移し、この地の祈願所となった。
湧く水の水上に飛泉があり、鯉はこの水の勢いが強くよく遡上できず、引き返るゆえに「鯉返り観音」と言われている。また、鯉が観世音菩薩の威光無量にしてその金色に輝く光明におそれ、引き返ったことから称せられたとの説もある。
大永元年（1521）現在の中寺に遷して地蔵菩薩を本尊とし、愛宕山日輪院大福寺と改め、火伏・豊穣を祈る信夫の地の祈願所となる。
明治24年、観音堂と経堂を残し一山を焼失したが、明治26年に再建された。焼失を免れた観音堂は約260年前の江戸時代中期に建てられたものである。
本尊 地蔵菩薩
本尊地蔵菩薩の元のお姿は秘仏で将軍菩薩である。
今から約500年前にこの中寺の地に移り、寺号を改めてからのご本尊である。
観音堂
大福寺の観音堂には秘仏の正観世音菩薩が祀られている。江戸時代の中期に建てられたもので、一般的に観音堂は単独の建物であるがここでは神社の拝殿・幣殿・本殿を思わせる構成で神仏習合の名残がうかがえる。また茅葺の屋根は正面と両脇の三方に破風を配した珍しい形状である。
鐘楼堂
以前に建立された鐘楼堂は昭和17年太平洋戦争の軍事用に鐘楼が供出され、鐘楼堂も撤去された。東日本大震災を機に多くの犠牲者の供養の為、平成28年再建された。梵鐘は高さ210センチ、重さ約2トンで県内有数の大きさを誇る。

The Origin of Daifukuji
Gyoki Bosastu(668-749) visited this area and established a training dojo to practice self discipline at the source of the Hattanda River. Later, in the fourth year of the Daido era(809), the Kongousan Kannonji Temple was founded, with the Holy Avalokitesvara as its main deity.
However, due to the remote location deep in the mountains, around 800 years ago during the Kamakura period, the temple was relocated to Orito, becoming a place of payer for the local community.
The temple was located above a waterfall with a strong current which prevented the koi from continuing their swim upstream. The koi were forced to turn back, which with led to the naming of Koigaeri Kannon. Another narrative posits the koi turned back in fear from the power emanating from the Kannzeon.
In the first year of the Daiei era（1521, the temple was moved to its current location, where the Jizo Bosatsu became the main deity, and it was renamed the Atagosan Nichirinin Daifukuji Temple, becoming a place of prayer for water and abundant harvest in that era.
In the 24th year of Meiji(1891), the buildings were almost completely destroyed by fire, leaving only the Kannon hall and the Sutra hall, however the buildings were rebuilt in1893. The Kanno hall, which survived the fire, has been standing for 260 years since the mid-Edo period.
